The three wise men from East
In bibliography we find the three wise men named as “The three Magi” or “The three Kings”. They were wise men who had studied the prophecies about Jesus’ birth. They travelled for a long time, following the Star of Bethlehem, to worship the God child.
What are their names?
Their names are as follows: Gaspar or Cspar, Melchior and Balthazar. The three wise man were from East. Gaspar or Caspar was from India, Melchior was from Persia and Balthazar was from Arabia.
What are the gifts they offered to Jesus?
The gifts were very precious for the King. Gold, frankincense and myrrh.
Gold is known for its shine and value. It is a precious metal used for jewelry, coins and idols. Frankincense is a very expensive fragrance that comes from trees in India and Arabia. Myrrh is a perfume that comes from bushes in Arabia and Ethiopia. It is mostly used as an antiseptic oil and embalming liquid.
What do the gifts symbolize?
Each of these gifts symbolises Jesus’ identity. Gold is associated with Jesus’ royal identity, frankincense is connected with Jesus divine nature and myrrh symbolizes the fact that he died for the humans’ sins.
What is the deepest meaning of wise men? Why did they visit Jesus?
The Three Magi wanted to honor Jesus. They have been travelling for a long time with the divine light above them to worship the King.
We should also respond to Jesus who invites us to love Him. Material gifts are not the centre of Christmas. Responding with real love to Jesus and to people around us is the most important message behind “The three Magi” story.
