“Ayasmos”, is here!
On Friday 11 September, the service of “ayasmos”, αγιασμός, in Greek, will take place in all the Greek schools. This Holy Service, traditionally takes place during the first week of September in all the Greek Orthodox schools abroad, too.
What is the meaning of “Ayasmos”?
Ayasmos is the blessing water. The priest who is invited by the school Head blesses the water and runs the Holy service of Ayasmos. It is indeed the service that kicks off the new academic year. Priests visit schools and campuses to bless students, teachers, administrators, all the staff of them. Ayasmos is the great service that brings together all the members of the school community.
Why is Ayasmos so important?
Keeps alive the Orthodox spirit, emphasizes the importance of Hellenic – Orthodox identity in multicultural school communities. The “blessing of the water” is considered pivotal by the Archbishops of the Greek Orthodox Communities abroad. Archbishops visit the Greek Orthodox schools to bless the school students and the staff with the ayasmos.
