The Virgin Mary of Myrtidia – Η Παναγία η Μυρτιδιώτισσα
The Virgin Mary of Myrtidia—the patron saint and protector of Kythira—is associated with one of the most miraculous icons in Orthodoxy, boasting a history that spans centuries and traditions that remain alive to this day. According to tradition, the icon was discovered by a shepherd in the Myrtidia area—a name derived from the myrtle bushes, μύρτιλα, in Greek, found there. The renown of Panagia Myrtidiotissa is linked to numerous miracles, which are also reflected in the votive offerings adorning the church.
September 24, the Orthodox Church honors the Synaxis of the Virgin Mary of Myrtidia, the patron saint and protector of Kythira.
