What do the Orthodox church celebrate on 23 August?

On August 23, nine days after the great feast of the Assumption of the Theotokos, the Orthodox Church commemorates the Attribute of the feast of the Dormition of Theotokos. This day in the Orthodox tradition is known as the “Nine Days of the Virgin Mary”, τα εννιάμερα της Παναγίας.

Why is this day so important?

This day marks the completion of the festive cycle that began with August 15th. The Church repeats the hymns and the festive ritual of the Dormition.

It is a day of hope and joy, as according to the faith of the Orthodox Church, the Virgin Mary, after her earthly sleep, passed on to eternal life near her Son. This is the reason why August 15th has often been described as the “Easter of the summer”, το Πάσχα του καλοκαιριού.

In many regions of the country, churches and monasteries, dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos celebrate with greatness. Pilgrims come to church to light a candle, pray and ask for Panagia’s help and intercession.

Panagia Tourliani of Mykonos – The devotional celebration the Assumption of Theotikos

A large crowd of believers from Mykonos, as well as visitors who spend their holidays on the island, flooded the historic Holy Monastery of Panagia Tourliani, in Ano Mera location of Mykonos. On Saturday, August 22, the Great Hierarchical Vespers were held there for the celebration of the 9 days after Dormition of the Theotokos. The official clergy and people participated both days, the Eve of Enniamera and the official day, August 23.
