Cyclades means…
Cyclades is the group of islands southeast of the mainland Greece. They are the is;ands of the Aegean Sea. In past times, Cyclades were the centre of commerce. Their name derives from the word circle, κύκλος in Greek. They form a shape of circle around Delos. Delos is an archaelogical site protected by UNESCO. It is the birthplace of the god Apollon and the goddess Artemis. The Greek tribes, the Ioanians, used to go to Delos to make a pilgrimage. Moreover, Delos was the meeting place for the Delian League (478 BC).
Basic characteristics of Cyclades
There are a lot of common characteristics of cycladic beauty. The crystal blue sea waters and the rocks such as granite, marble and volcanic rocks. Cycladic has sandy beaches or rocky coastlines. The waters are crystal. All Cycladic islands have fields of grapes. White and red wine is produced by people who live in Cyclades. The main towns of Cyclades are rich in the white houses and churches with the light blue or red windows. Moreover, the paved narrow roads of a Cycladic chora are unique. The Greek word of these roads is «σοκάκια». While strolling acrosss the “sokakia”, tourists like shopping souvenirs.

Cycladic Civilization
The Cycladic Civilization dates back in Bonze Age (3100 BC – 1000BC). It flourished between the years 3200 and 1050 BC. Ceramic artifacts and marble small statues are characteristic findings of this Civilization found in Cyclades. In modern times, tourists visit the archaeological museums and the museums of folk art of Cycladic islands to admire the artefacts.
The identity of the most well-known Cycladic islands
Naxos
Naxos is the biggest island of Cyclades. It is considered to be the birthplace of the God Zeus. Portara is the landmark of Naxos. It is part of the Temple of the God Apollon. Naxos has small villages that tourists love to visit. Apiranthos, Filoti and Chalki are the names of the villages that are busy during the summer season. Rosto, pork with tomato sauce is one traditional and delicious dish of Naxos. Graviera from Naxos, a tasty cheese, is one of the best in Greece.
Syros
Syros is the capital of Cyclades. Ermoupoli, the centre of Syros, is indeed wonderful because it combines modern times and tradition ones. The etymology of the word is as follows: Hermes + polis. The city of Hermes. Hermes is the God of commerce. In past times Syros was the primary port of Greece. Its architecture is neoclassical. Visitors enjoy walking in the narrow streets and admire old buildings of the city.
Milos
Milos is a traditional Cycladic island. The word Milos derives from the word vilos (βήλος) that means sheep (πρόβατο).In the past it used to be the centre of mining. Nowadays, Milos has a mining museum that preserves and promotes the mining history of Milos. White houses, narrow streets and volcanic beaches are basic characteristics of this Cycladic island. The colour of the rocks is amazing. It is white with grey and gives the impression of purity. “Adamas” is the island’s main port, “Plaka”, could be considered as most beautiful village and the “Kleftiko Caves” is a wonderful and well-known beach. Pollonia is the picturesque and busy town. Milos’ unique geological formations and its crystal sea waters attract a great majority of tourists.

Οι Κυκλάδες είναι τα νησιά του Αιγαίου Πελάγους με πρωτεύουσα την Ερμούπολη της Σύρου. Το όνομά τους προέρχεται τη λέξη «κύκλος». Οι Κυκλάδες βρίσκονται σε κυκλική τροχιά γύρω από τη Δήλο. Η Δήλος στο παρελθόν αποτελούσε το κέντρο του εμπορίου. Σήμερα αποτελεί μνημείο υψίστης πολιτισμικής αξίας που προστατεύεται από την Ουνέσκο.
Τα πιο σημαντικά νησιά των Κυκλάδων
Η Νάξος, η Σύρος, η Τήνος, η Μύκονος, η Σαντορίνη, η Πάρος, η Αντίπαρος, η Μήλος, η Σέριφος, η Σίφνος, η Σίκινος, η Κίμωλος, η Κέα, η Κύθνος, η Φολέγανδρος, η Αμοργός, η Ανάφη, η Ίος. Οι μικρές Κυκλάδες είναι τα ακόλουθα νησιά: η Δονούσα, η Σχοινούσα, η Ηρακλειά, τα Κουφονήσια και η Κέρος.
Τα κοινά χαρακτηριστικά των Κυκλάδων
Όλα τα νησιά των Κυκλάδων έχουν κάποια κοινά χαρακτηριστικά. Όμως, το καθένα έχει τη μοναδικότητά του. Όλα διαθέτουν παραλίες με κρυστάλλινα νερά και ιαματικές πηγές, γραφικές ακρογιαλιές με άμμο ή ηφαιστειακά πετρώματα καθώς και αξιοθαύμαστες θαλάσσιες σπηλιές. Τα απότομα μικρά βουνά, τα αμπέλια, οι ελαιώνες, τα κατάλοιπα αρχαίων ναών και οι ανεμόμυλοι είναι ένα ακόμα κυρίαρχο χαρακτηριστικό των Κυκλάδων. Τα ασβεστωμένα σπίτια, τα μικρά και αξιοζήλευτα σοκάκια, οι γαλάζιοι τρούλοι των εκκλησιών, τα υψηλά καμπαναριά των μοναστηριών συνθέτουν ένα καταπληκτικό τοπίο που δεν μπορεί παρά να είναι κυκλαδίτικο. Και βέβαια, οι παραδόσεις του κάθε νησιού είναι ιδιαίτερες. Πίσω από το όνομα τους κρύβονται αρχέγονες παραδόσεις που είναι καλό να μεταδίδονται και να διατηρούνται αναλλοίωτες από γενιά σε γενιά.

Νάξος
Η Νάξος είναι το μεγαλύτερο νησί των Κυκλάδων. Η Πορτάρα της Νάξου αποτελεί το σημείο αναφοράς του νησιού.
Σύρος
Η πρωτεύουσα της Σύρου, η Ερμούπολη, είναι και η πρωτεύουσα των Κυκλάδων. Πρόκειται για την πόλη του Ερμή που αποτέλεσε το κέντρο του εμπορίου της Ανατολικής Μεσογείου μετά την επανάσταση του 1821
Τήνος
Η Τήνος είναι το νησί της Μεγαλόχαρης Παναγίας. Επισκέπτες από όλα τα μέρη της γης έρχονται να προσκυνήσουν την εικόνα της Παναγίας της Τήνου. Στο νησί αυτό έδρασαν μεγάλοι ζωγράφοι και γλύπτες, όπως ο Γύζης, ο Λύτρας, ο Χαλεπάς και ο Φιλιππότης.
Μήλος
Η Μήλος είναι το νησί στο οποίο βρέθηκε το καταπληκτικό άγαλμα, η Αφροδίτη της Μήλου, σκαλισμένη σε παριανό μάρμαρο. Η Μήλος είναι γνωστή για το ηφαιστειογενές έδαφός της, τις κατάλευκες παραλίες της, τους καλοσμιλεμένους βράχους της. Διαθέτει πλούσιο ορυκτό πλούτο. Η εκμετάλλευση των ορυκτών αποτελούσε από το παρελθόν την κεντρική οικονομική δραστηριότητα του νησιού.
