Spring flowers

Spring starts in March and finishes in May. In Greece the weather is mild and the nature is wonderful. There is a great variety of endemic flowers that offer a colorful view all over the countryside. March flower

The March flower blossoms during March. It is found everywhere in the island of Kythera. Ancient Greeks dedicated this flower to the goddess Artemis. In Kythera, this flower is named Martolouloudo, Myrtolouloudo or Margarita. Margarita or agria Margarita is its name in other places of Greece.

Chamomile flowers

These flowers can be found anywhere in the countryside. It is a delicate and really smelly flower. The white petals with the yellow centre make a catchy striking difference. This flower can be boiled and drunk in winter time since it has therapic benefits.

Poppies

The poppy is the flower of sacrifice and loss. It symbolises peace after big battles. Moreover, in Greek mythology it was linked to the Goddess Demeter. This flower has inspired a lot of Greek writers. It is found in Greek classic prose. Its red color is unique. Poppies shape with the black centre makes it very impressive. During the spring season, Peloponnese is filled with vibrant poppies.

Lalades, the wild tulips of Chios

Lalades are plain and delicate. “Lale” in Persian language means tulip.This type of tulip is found only in Chios. Lalades’ color is reddish. These tulips create a unique landscape in Chios. It is an inseparable part of the biodiversity of Chios.

Violets

Violets welcome spring. Another name of violet, “βιολέτα”, in Modern Greek is ”μενεξές”. Furthermore, in Ancient Greek, the name of this flower was “ἴον”. A big variety of colorful violets, such as purple, white, pink, fuxia and bluish are located in Greece. This beautiful flower symbolises love.
