Are you ready for the new school year? Schools are open again. Teachers and students are preparing for their new duties. It is a new start for the whole school community.
What happens during the first day of school?
The first day of the school year, students are given their textbooks and their timetable. Moreover, “ayiasmos”, a religious ceremony takes place. During this event, a priest blesses the water in a big cup. He dips the Holy Cross into the water. Then, he sprinkles the Holy water with a bundle of basil slightly over the teachers and students’ heads. Therefore, ‘ayiasmos’ is the sanctification of the water. This religious ceremony takes place at the school yard. The reason why ‘ayiasmos’ is done is for the students and teachers to progress and have a creative school year.
New stationary and athletic outfit
When school opens, students go to the bookshops to buy new exercise books, folders, pencils, pens and all the other stationery they need for Maths, Language lessons, Art and Music. For instance, they buy ruler and compass for Maths as well as paintbrushes and watercolour paints for Art. For their Music lesson they may need to buy a new instrument.They also buy sneakers and new athletic clothing for the PE lesson.
Setting goals for the school year
September is the appropriate time for the school Heads to rethink their educational methods and for teachers to improve their curriculum. Students should speculate on their studying habits and organise their everyday schedule effectively. Last but not least, it is important for parents to praise their children every day for their hard work. Students have a demanding schedule and they need their parents’ good words.
Students’ timetable after school
In Greece, students attend a lot of lessons after school. They learn English, French, German and other foreign languages at private language centres. They also attend sport lessons such as basketball, football, tennis, swimming, music and martial Arts at private educational centres. In other words, their daily schedule is full.
