The last half Marathon race took part in Athens March 9, 2025.

Who was Pheidippides?

The courier Pheidippides or Philippides made a historic run. It is believed that the courier ran a remarkable 153 miles back and forth. He ran between Athens and Sparta over 36 hours. Pheidippides announced the news of victory to the Athenians against the Persians. Therefore, this fact became the basis for the modern Marathon race

According to the ancient historian Herodotus, an experienced runner, Pheidippides (also spelled Phidippides, or Philippides), ran from Athens to Sparta before the battle. He requested assistance from the Spartan. It is said to have covered about 150 miles (240 km) in about two days.

Who was Eukles?

However, in A.D. 347, Plutarch wrote that the messenger was Eukles. He ran with his armor from the battle. And said ‘Be happy! We have won!’ and immediately died.

Marathon Battle

This Battle took place in 490 BC. The Persians were defeated by the Greeks. The battle took place at the bay of Marathon. Miltiades was the General who led the Greeks to a great victory. According to historical facts, 10,000 Athenians and 1,000 Plataeans  fought against the Persian force of 15,000. This victory confirmed conclusively that the Greeks were superior over the Persians.

The first Marathon race – Spyridon Louis

The first Marathon race in Athens took part April, 10 in 1896.  Athletes from five countries: Greece, Hungary, Australia, France and the United States took part. The Greek athlete, Spiridon Louis, won the race. Charilaos Vasilakos came in second. Spyridon Louis’ victory remains a powerful symbol of Greek national pride. It is indeed a symbol that connects all the hearts of his compatriots and people around the world. That time, Louis’ victory was pivotal for Greece.

Motivating kids to take part in Marathon races is very important. The minimum age to enter the Marathon race is 14 years old. The preparation for a Marathon should start a long time in advance. Rigorous training is needed which could drive the participants to victory. In this way, children realize that if they want to be winners, they should try hard. Focusing on their goal, the victory, maintains their physical health, maximizes their love for movement and fosters their self-confidenence.
